EMBAIXADOR DA UNESCO PARA A EDUCAÇÃO, CIÊNCIA E CULTURA
Tomou posse como reitor da Universidade de Lisboa em maio de 2009. É também professor catedrático da Faculdade de Psicologia e de Ciências da Educação da Universidade de Lisboa e foi presidente da Associação Internacional de História da Educação - (ISCHE 2000-2003).
Áreas de especialização: História da Educação e Educação Comparada. Em 2012 foi-lhe atribuído (por unanimidade) o título de membro honorário da UNIVERSEUM - European Academic Heritage Network, uma rede de Universidades, reconhecida pelo Conselho Europeu, que procura valorizar o património científico, museológico, monumental, botânico e arquivístico das Universidades Europeias.
Foi consultor para a Educação do Presidente da República Jorge Sampaio e mais tarde candidato à Presidência da República. Esteve presente em múltiplos comités e instituições, nacionais e internacionais. Publicou mais de uma centena de trabalhos científicos na área da Educação - em particular sobre temáticas da profissão docente, da história da educação e da educação comparada em diversos países, nomeadamente Alemanha, Bélgica, Brasil, Canadá, Colômbia, Espanha, Estados Unidos da América, Finlândia, França, Portugal, Reino Unido e Suíça. António Sampaio da Nóvoa acredita que a Educação é o motor da liberdade.

He was appointed Dean of the University of Lisbon in May 2009. He is also a full professor at the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of the University of Lisbon and was president of the International Association of History of Education (ISCHE, 2000-2003).
Areas of specialization: History of Education and Comparative Education. In 2012, he was unanimously awarded the title of honorary member of the UNIVERSEUM - European Academic Heritage Network, a network of universities recognized by the European Council, which seeks to enhance the scientific, museological, monumental, botanical and archival heritage of the European Universities.
He was a consultant for the Education of the President of the Republic Jorge Sampaio and later a candidate for the Presidency of the Republic. He was present in multiple national and international committees and institutions. He has published more than a hundred scientific papers in the field of Education - in particular on the subjects of the teaching profession, the history of education and comparative education in several countries, namely Germany, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Spain, United States of America, Finland, France, Portugal, United Kingdom and Switzerland. António Sampaio da Nóvoa believes that Education is the engine of freedom.
